Day 124 of year 3

I thought about waves all day. I went in the studio tonight expecting to make one, but as usual my plans came to nothing. This monotype was supposed to be the background for a wave but once I printed the sun, it was clear the energy of this print was complete. I'm getting better at respecting and listening to the creative flow. There was a time I would have insisted on the wave to the detriment of my overall ease and work flow. Keeping the channel open is more important than any single piece. The top three necessities for an artist (in my opinion):

1- Listening
2- Trust
3- Perseverance

Tonight, I'm I feeling grateful for all the support I get from my Patreon subscribers and my followers on social media. Having a long term illness means I don't get out as often as I would like and our interactions have meant the world to me. One of the fundamental Ideas underlying my work is that what we do matters, our actions in the world matter, making art matters, even if we never understand why. Day 121 of year 3

This is a rework of an image I did on a smaller plate as a demo at the studio tour. I find when I have an idea and I go back to it, it's not as fresh. The mind begins to interfere and control. I'm not judging the image, only the feeling I had while making it. I slept again for most of the day but I think I'll be back to myself tomorrow. Fingers crossed! xo

Studio Tour Recap

Some pictures from the Studio Tour SOMA this weekend. A huge thank you to everyone who came out! As usual, I didn’t get a picture of everyone but your presence was valued and appreciated none the less! Big shout to all the studio tour volunteers this year. I really thought the tour would die after Sandy Martiny’s position was eliminated but Jennifer Crohn preformed a miracle and made it happen! Kudos Jennifer, you rock! Thanks also to Susanna Baker and Studio Montclair for sponsoring us, Susan Darwin for amazing artist relations and social media (with Lisa Lackey), Leslie Goldman for among other things a gorgeous PDF artist listing, Wendy Bellermann for foot work in handing out posters and flyers, and Greg Leshé for the amazing projector project! The SOMA Projector Project

Some photos of my art projected on SOPAC, a 5 story performing arts center / movie theater in conjunction with the SOMA Studio Tour this week. So fun! I printed on top of a demo I did on the studio tour this weekend. It's good to work quickly from time to time as I do in demos. It keeps things fresh and keeps the brain quiet (poem below the title)

Your boat, they will tell you,
cannot leave the harbor
without discipline.

But they will neglect to mention
that discipline has a vanishing point,
an invisible horizon where belief takes over.

They will not whisper to you the secret
that they themselves have not fully understood: that
belief is the only wind with breath enough

to take you past the deadly calms, the stopped motion
toward that place you have imagined,
the existence of which you cannot prove

except by going there.

Day 119 of year 3

Still exhausted from the studio tour, but managed to get this print done somehow! One thing I've learned through the course of this project is the importance of will and decision. Many a night when I was sick or exhausted it was sheer force of will that got me up into the studio. It's a formidable power within each of us if we choose to access it. I slept most of the day and am heading back to bed now. I'll post some tour pictures tomorrow. xo

These are a couple of prints I did as demos during the studio tour today. It's always so much fun work in front of a crowd! It was another great day. The work of being an artist is often solitary so it's always a treat to show work and meet new and old friends.

Day 117 of year 3

What a great day at the outdoor studio tour! So wonderful to reconnect with long time friends, followers, and collectors, meet new people and sell work. It was a gorgeous and happy day on many counts. This is a demo piece I did during the show. All day my materials were fighting me at every turn. The ink was resisting the plate and bubbling so instead of using a brayer to roll the ink on, I started wiping it on. The effect is quite different, lots of movement. I think I will explore this more after the tour is over. Mistakes and fights with materials often bear fruit if listened to.
