This catalog acts a symbol guide for my work. Excepts written by Kathryn Mcguire, Clerestory Fine Art:
Window/Arches
Archibald started depicting windows when she was very sick and in and out of hospitals repeatedly. For Sybil, “There’s a tension between the physical world and the spiritual world and the thinness of the veil between the two worlds.” In her work, there is always energy coming and going back and forth between one realm and the other. The window is a way of accessing that. Eventually the symbol expanded, things start stepping through the windows, bringing more of the spiritual world into the physical world. Arches are doorways; similar to windows; a way between worlds.
Moons
Nighttime, “ Most of my scenes takes place at night, the time of the subconscious. Again, this plays with the theme of difficulty and darkness not necessarily being bad, but embracing the unknown aspect of your journey. We might think we know and construct a story around it, but we don’t know exactly. The moon is a spiritual light there to guide the way.. it also references the divine feminine.
